Hotter, drier day tests Colorado fire crews

A day after firefighters made great progress against the fire outside Colorado Springs, hotter and drier conditions on Saturday made for a major test.

"Today is going to be our test day," Jerri Marr of the U.S. Forest Service said at a morning briefing.

"Fire activity is expected to increase today and tomorrow," the incident command said in its written update. "Possible afternoon thunderstorms could also bring strong, gusty winds. Temperatures are expected to reach at least 15 degrees above season normal."

The 26-square-mile Waldo Canyon fire, one of many burning across the West, is now 30 percent contained, up from 15 percent early Friday.

More than 150 National Guard soldiers and airmen are helping Colorado Springs police staff roadblocks and patrol streets after a deadly wildfire killed two people and destroyed nearly 350 homes.

Police Chief Pete Carey said Saturday the presence of military personnel will allow his department to resume normal police work in the rest of the city.

"We're grateful for the help," he said.

About 10,000 people remain evacuated on Saturday, down from 35,000 at the fire's peak.

Investigators haven't been able to visit the area where the fire broke out on June 23 to determine the cause.

Two bodies were found in the ruins of one house. The victims' names haven't been released.

Police say fewer than 10 people may be unaccounted for.

There were plans to let people whose residences burned take weekend bus trips to the affected neighborhoods to take a look, but they would not be allowed to leave the vehicles.

After growing explosively earlier in the week, the Colorado Springs fire gained no ground overnight, authorities reported Friday. And the weather was clear and mostly calm, a welcome break from the lightning and high wind that drove the flames.

Exhausted firefighters fresh off the front lines described the devastation in some neighborhoods and the challenges of battling such a huge blaze, now the most destructive in Colorado history.

"It looks like hell. I would imagine it felt like a nuclear bomb went off. There was fire everywhere. Everything had a square shape to it because it was foundations," said Rich Rexach, who had been working 12-hour days since Tuesday, when flames swept through neighborhoods in this city of more than 400,000 people 60 miles south of Denver.

Story: Wildfire crews fight for health coverage in online campaign

President Barack Obama toured the stricken areas Friday after issuing a disaster declaration for Colorado that frees up federal funds. He thanked firefighters and other emergency workers, saying: "The country is grateful for your work. The country's got your back."

As residents waited anxiously to see what was left of their homes, police reported several burglaries in evacuated areas, along with break-ins of cars packed with evacuees' possessions outside hotels. Carey said Friday a person wearing protective fire gear in an evacuated area was arrested on charges of impersonating a firefighter and influencing a public official.

Community leaders began notifying residents Thursday that their homes were destroyed. Many lost almost everything.

"The blanket that was on my bed when I grew up, a bunch of things my mother had made," said Rick Spraycar, listing what he lost when his house in the hard-hit Mountain Shadows subdivision burned down. "It's hard to put it into words. Everything I owned. Memories."

For Ernie Storti the pain of knowing that his was one of a handful of homes spared in his neighborhood was hard.

"Our home was standing, and everything south of us was gone," he said as tears streamed down his face outside a Red Cross Shelter where he had met with insurance agents.

Authorities were still trying to figure out what caused the fire. They said conditions were improving and they hoped experts would soon be able to work to determine a cause.

More than 1,200 personnel and six helicopters were fighting the fire.

All eight Air Force firefighting planes from four states will be at Colorado Springs' Peterson Air Force Base Saturday and available to fight the fire, marking the first time the entire fleet has been activated since 2008, Col. Jerry Champlin said.

Among the fires elsewhere in the West:

  • Wyoming: A wildfire in a sparsely populated area of southeastern Wyoming exploded from eight square miles to nearly 58 square miles in a single day in hot, windy weather. Authorities said Saturday the Arapaho Fire has some structures but the area is still too dangerous to allow a detailed survey.
  • Idaho: At least 60 homes near Pocatello, Idaho, burned in a fast-moving wildfire that started Thursday evening. The blaze covered more than 1? square miles. Officials said it was human-caused but gave no details.
  • Utah: Residents of nearly a thousand homes in Herriman, just southwest of Salt Lake City, were under an evacuation order Saturday after a wildfire burned through the area, destroying at least four houses and several other structures, authorities said. Fire crews appeared to have the 350-acre Rose Crest fire at bay Friday evening. A 70-square-mile wildfire in Utah's Sanpete County destroyed at least 160 structures, more than 50 of them primary homes. A similar sized blaze in Utah was threatening about 75 structures.
  • Montana: Residents of eastern and central Montana who evacuated due to wildfires are returning to find neighborhoods scorched and many houses reduced to piles of ash. Fire officials said Friday that 70 homes burned in the 20,000-acre Dahl fire south of Roundup. At least two dozen structures were reported burned in a 270-square-mile fire in the Ashland.

Authorities battling six wildfires in Utah said Colorado was taking most of the available fire crews, leaving them short-handed.

Utah fire commander Cheto Olais said leaders at one Utah blaze had requested about 200 additional firefighters but will probably get no more than 20. "A lot of assets are going to Colorado," Olais said.

"We're strapped nationally," he told The Associated Press. "There's only so many firefighters, and they're already out in the field."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Army hands over power to Egypt's first Islamist president

CAIRO (Reuters) - Mohamed Mursi was sworn in on Saturday as Egypt's first Islamist, civilian and freely elected president, reaping the fruits of last year's revolt against Hosni Mubarak, although the military remains determined to call the shots.

The military council that took over after Mubarak's overthrow on February 11, 2011, formally handed power to Mursi later in an elaborate ceremony at a desert army base outside Cairo.

At the ceremony, Mursi hailed what he called a unique model of "how power is transferred from the Egyptian military forces by the will of the people to an elected, civilian power", praising the army for keeping its promise to do so.

Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, who saluted Mursi when he arrived at Heikstep army base for the televised occasion, said: "Now we have an elected president who takes over the keys for ruling Egypt through a direct and free vote."

The handover of power to an Islamist by a military that long backed Mubarak and his suppression of the Muslim Brotherhood was just one moment in a day rich in images that told of how much Egypt has changed, as well as the fragility of its transition.

Egypt remains in political limbo, without a constitution, a lower house of parliament or any clarity about the role of a military anxious to stay in the driving seat, as Islamists and others challenge its right to do so.

Mursi, a bearded engineer who turned to the Brotherhood as a graduate student in Los Angeles, is Egypt's first civilian leader since army officers toppled the king in 1952.

For the 84-year-old Brotherhood, banned and repressed by Mubarak, it marks a dramatic reversal of fortunes.

"God is greatest, above all," said Mursi, 60, at Cairo University at the start of a speech after swearing his oath of office at the Supreme Constitutional Court.

"Egypt will not go backwards," Mursi said, pledging to keep the country on a democratic course, but saying it would not "export the revolution" or interfere in the affairs of others.

"We carry a message of peace to the world," Mursi said, reaffirming Egypt's commitment to international agreements, which include its U.S.-brokered 1979 peace treaty with Israel.

Israel has watched the rise of the Brotherhood in Egypt with apprehension since the fall of Mubarak, who staunchly upheld peace with the Jewish state, even if relations were never warm.

Mursi pledged to work to end bloodshed in Syria, scene of the most violent of a string of Arab uprisings.

WRANGLING OVER VENUE

The president was sworn in by the constitutional court, instead of parliament as is usual, because the court dissolved the Islamist-led lower house earlier this month amid a raft of measures to ensure enduring military influence.

The Nile-side constitutional court building where Mursi took his oath is next to the plush military hospital where Mubarak was transferred last week from the prison where he had begun a life term for failing to stop police killings of protesters.

The Brotherhood reluctantly accepted the venue, but in a symbolic riposte, Mursi read his oath on Friday to crowds in Cairo's protest hub, Tahrir Square. He told supporters there that the people were the only source of power, in a dig at the generals who see themselves as the state's ultimate arbiters.

The new president won a standing ovation when he recited his vow for a third time during his speech at Cairo University, delivered from the podium used by U.S. President Barack Obama to reach out to the Islamic world in 2009, early in his term.

An honor guard, artillery salute and the national anthem greeted Mursi at the university, where "No SCAF", the acronym for the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, was scrawled on a wall visible on television as he drove in.

In the audience were women in full Islamic face veils or headscarves, some waving portraits of "martyrs" killed in the anti-Mubarak uprising. Christian priests sat alongside Muslim clerics and men in suits or robes, some with beards.

When Egypt's military chief Tantawi arrived, some applauded, while others chanted "Down with military rule".

Tantawi's SCAF has guided a chaotic and sometimes bloody transition since Mubarak's overthrow, holding elections, but issuing arbitrary and often contradictory decrees, while the economy shrank, increasing hardship for millions of Egyptians.

An army decree on June 17 clipped presidential powers, denying the head of state his role as supreme commander of the armed forces with the right to decide on war and peace. It also gave SCAF legislative powers until a new parliament is elected, as well as veto rights over the writing of a new constitution.

TUSSLE FOR POWER

Much remains uncertain, with a protracted struggle likely as Islamists seek to roll back the control of a once all-powerful military, as their counterparts in Turkey have done.

An assembly that is supposed to write a new constitution has begun work after its predecessor fell apart amid disputes over whether Islamists were over-represented, in a country with a 10 percent Christian minority and many secular-minded liberals.

Egypt's 82 million people are more polarized than ever.

Mursi narrowly won a run-off vote against Ahmed Shafik, a former air force chief and Mubarak's last prime minister, but many voters were dismayed at having to choose between an Islamist and a man seen as a remnant of Mubarak's era.

Egypt will find it hard to attract the investment, loans and foreign aid it needs to revive an economy blighted by months of turmoil and uncertainty until political stability returns.

The International Monetary Fund's head, Christine Lagarde, called Mursi to discuss Egypt's economic challenges and how the IMF can best help, an IMF spokeswoman said on Friday.

Lagarde hailed Mursi's election as "an important step forward in Egypt's transition", but the Fund has set no date for a staff visit to discuss a proposed $3.2 billion IMF loan, pending the formation of a new government.

In Tahrir, where demonstrators have camped out for weeks to demand an end to military rule, one man said the protest would go on. "We will not leave until parliament is restored and the president gets all his authorities," said Mahmoud Arafa, 41.

Arafa, a shopkeeper from Shabin al-Kom in the Nile Delta, said he wanted Mursi to fulfill the promises he made for his first 100 days in office. "If he cannot, we will help him."

The Muslim Brotherhood's programme calls for swift measures with an immediate social impact, pledging to get traffic moving, restore security, collect rubbish, and clear bottlenecks in the distribution of subsidized bread, petrol and cooking gas.

"For the first time in my life I feel we have elected a leader through our own free will," said Mustafa Abu Hanafi, 31, an unemployed computer engineer from Giza.

"When someone graduates he's supposed to have a job," he said. "You always needed 'wasta' (connections). Under Mursi this will change ... He's one of us."

Facebook iOS app to get quicker, reports

Facebook iOS app to get quicker, reportsAccording to reports, the Facebook app for the iOS platform will become much quicker and will allow users to access the social networking site in a much faster way.

The social network's iPhone app will get a major speed boost, according to a new report by the New York Times. The report cited Facebook engineers and said that the social network is planning to completely revamp its app for Apple devices.

The report suggest that the latest version of the Facebook app is being tested by engineers at Facebook and is expected to be released sometimes during the next month. The report said that the app will most likely look similar but will work much faster.

It is believed that the new app will be built primarily using a coding language called Objective-C, which is also used to build many other iOS apps. The existing Facebook app is uses Objective-C for but many of its components are based on HTML5. Experts say that Objective-C is faster than HTML5 because it collects less information from the internet, unlike HTML5 that draws content directly from the internet.

List Building Secrets True of False? | Clinton Douglas IV's Empower ...

Why is following up with your leads so important? Simple, building your list is just the first step towards your success of any online business, in fact any business period! So what is the secret to building a huge list quickly? What you may be surprised when I tell you there is no secret.

List Building Secrets

?

?

While there are some tactics and techniques that can greatly increase your list size very fast there are a few key things that you need to pay attention to when building your list.

?

When advertising to build your list, you must ask yourself the following questions. Am I building the curiosity of the reader? Am I giving something of value to the reader? These are very important questions have to ask when you?re advertising to get more people on your list.

?

List Building Secret Myth 1

?

1) Building curiosity for the reader can consist of a catchy phrase in the subject line that catches people attention, a very strong compelling message in the body of your e-mail and that can be for either long or short depending on your purpose of the e-mail message. For example, when you?re advertising on someone else?s list to build your list you only have a short amount of time to get their attention as they don?t know you. In my experience, it is much more effective to use short copy with no longer stand two to three sentences. When using this short copy tactic want advertising on someone else?s list your building that curiosity for them to click on your link and to go over to your landing page to get more information. Think of it as this, you?re setting the bait and waiting for the fish to come in and bite. That?s it, that?s how simple it is.

?

List Building Secret Myth 2

?

2) Giving something of value? A lot of marketers come online and they want to sell, sell, sell. When building a list using solo ads or any other type of marketing. While it is your intention to make a profit very quickly your main objective is to get people to trust you and get to know you. So in exchange for them giving up their e-mail are you providing them something of value once they get on your list that is going to keep them interested in your offer. For example, you can give away special report that teaches people how to sell widgets for $.99. By giving to a special report (which can be 3 to 5 pages) on a topic that you may or may not know about you have just gave people something of value and they can use today. In that instant, you have just created a special bond between you the potential customer by creating tremendous value of that special report in exchange for their e-mail.

?

You may have heard it said before that the fortune is in the follow-up. While there is a fortune to be made with building your list if you never follow-up with you people about your offer and never make any money online. Consistent follow-up will create long-term profits if done on a consistent basis.

?

All I said today will not amount to a Hill of Beans if you don?t have some type of system to capture email addresses and send them out. That?s one of the reasons why most people fail online is the lack of having a system that can do this for them. Today, you?re in luck, you have been exposed to one of the greatest blogging systems (Empower Network) on the planet. With only $25 you can have the best lead capture pages and the blogging system to give you the edge in today?s global market!
