16 Kickstarter projects that just might destroy civilization as we know it

1 day

Sure, these projects?seem quirky now, but that scrappy amateur fusion reactor might blow up the Earth. Fund at your own risk.?

?

1.?The space elevator
This project has been in the news all day, a 2km space elevator designed to hover over the moon first, and then eventually earth. The founders sound legit, but isn't this the sort of thing you might want to let NASA handle? If my cousin's modern dance documentary falls through, it's not such a big deal, but this is an enormous chunk of metal that could come plummeting out of the sky at any moment. Seems risky.

?

2. The homemade fusion reactor
This is a classic bad idea, making headlines when the Brooklyn-based reactor received funding back in 2010. That the borough has not since been consumed by fire, I put down to pure luck.

3. The Small Hadron Collider
Sure, it's less powerful than the Large Hadron Collider. In fact, it seems to be some kind of effects pedal and its connection to molecular physics is vague at best. Still, we feel as if they're meddling in forces they do not understand.

4. An enormous robot spider
Bond villains use Kickstarter too.

5. Wrathful gods and spirits of Tibet
This documentary project wants to travel to Tibet to study the "wrathful gods and spirits" of Himalayan Buddhism. Does that sound like the kind of thing that could, I don't know, unleash an ancient and unspeakable evil? You can't be too careful.

6. Mech warfare
I know, Battlebots are a thing, but it still seems unwise to build humanoid robots that specialize in hand-to-hand combat.

7. The Arduino satellite
It's just like a regular satellite, except it was designed over the Internet by volunteers with no obvious telecommunications experience.

8. Cards Against Humanity
A card game with the goal of destroying humanity. It's all in the name.

9. The 500,000-volt Tesla coil
Suspiciously similar to something you might build in "Command & Conquer."

10. The Z-Day manual
I take the zombie apocalypse very seriously, but I also think that by obsessively preparing for it, we may actually be weakening society in the event that it comes to pass. Everyone who buys this manual is going to go survivalist as soon as possible. It'll be all bikers and no flyboys! It's a bigger problem than people realize.

11. Roy the Robot
A mechanical claw, reaching toward humanity with unfathomable hatred, successfully funded on July 3.

12. DittoBlox modular building pods
I don't know what this is, but I don't trust it.

13. The Hermes spacecraft
Launch day for the world's first kickstarted rocket is going to be extremely nervous for everyone involved.

14. The Soundlazer
A death ray made of pure sound? Continue, I'm intrigued.

15. Hexy the Hexapod
"Hexy had only a vague sense of the forces that brought him into being, a shadowy network of 'backers' who seemed to respond to his existence with both horror and delight. Were there others like him somewhere? Was there a world in which hexapods lived as something more than an abomination? Whatever his future held, Hexy knew he could not rest until the monsters that created him had answered for their crimes."

16. Troller 1D
Have you seen the movie Screamers? They're kickstarting screamers.

Kohli leads India fightback with unbeaten 93

Virat Kohli cracked an impressive 93 not out to lead an Indian recovery on the second day of the second and final Test against New Zealand in Bangalore on Saturday.

The 23-year-old hit one six and 12 fours in his second successive Test half-century as the hosts, struggling at 80-4 at one stage, reached 283-5 in their first innings at stumps in reply to New Zealand's 365.

Kohli, who made 58 in the last Test, added 99 for the fifth wicket with Suresh Raina (55) and 104 for the unfinished sixth-wicket stand with Mahendra Singh Dhoni (46 not out) to keep alive his team's hopes of gaining the lead.

India trail by 82 runs with five wickets in hand.

Dhoni, who scored 73 in the opening Test, hit off-spinner Jeetan Patel for two successive sixes in his 70-ball knock which also contained five fours.

"Virat and I had a good partnership and now he and Dhoni are batting. Hopefully we can put a lot of runs on the board and the match is going to be interesting in the next three days," said Raina.

"Whenever I got the ball in my area I made sure of batting positively. I have done well in one-day internationals, so hopefully I will do better in Test cricket too. When I get a chance again I would look to score a big one."

India, who won the opening Test by an innings and 115 runs, lost experienced Virender Sehwag (43), Gautam Gambhir (two) and Sachin Tendulkar (17) before Kohli, Raina and Dhoni propped up the innings.

New Zealand's pacemen bowled well to keep pressure on India, with Tim Southee finishing the day with 3-35 and Doug Bracewell with 2-66.

"Obviously with the new ball it's nice to bowl and swing it, and we were lucky to pick up a few wickets there. India came back well after lunch as the ball got a bit older," said Southee.

"The wicket is pretty good, so I guess now it's an important time for us with the second new ball to see if we can pick up the rest of the wickets."

Raina, trying to cement his place in the middle order, was caught by wicket-keeper Kruger van Wyk down the leg-side off Southee after hitting one six and nine fours in his seventh Test half-century.

Stumped off a Patel no-ball when on 48, Raina counter-attacked to ease the pressure as he hit Bracewell for three successive fours and then smashed Southee for two boundaries in an over.

Southee removed opener Gambhir and Cheteshwar Pujara (nine) in his sharp opening spell in the morning, while Bracewell dismissed Sehwag and Tendulkar in his successive overs after lunch.

Gambhir, dropped on one by Brendon McCullum in the slips off paceman Trent Boult, failed to make the most of the chance as he was bowled offering no stroke.

Pujara, who scored 159 in the last Test, was caught by Boult at long leg while hooking.

Opener Sehwag fell immediately after hitting Bracewell for a four in the opening over of the afternoon session, caught by Daniel Flynn at short mid-wicket. He cracked eight fours in his 60-ball knock.

Bracewell then got a big wicket in his next over when he bowled Tendulkar to put more pressure on the hosts.

India's left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha earlier finished with 5-99, his third haul of five or more wickets in a Test innings, as New Zealand added 37 runs in 8.4 overs to their overnight total of 328-6.

Fast bowler Zaheer Khan was the first to strike when he had van Wyk (71) caught by Raina in the slips.

The New Zealand wicket-keeper added just eight runs to his overnight score of 63. He cracked nine fours in his maiden Test half-century and added 99 runs for the seventh wicket with Bracewell (43).

Bracewell, who was unbeaten on 30 on Friday, was run out after scoring 13 runs in the morning.

Romney likens the election to football: ?It?s time to get a new coach?

Romney in Cincinnati (Brian Snyder/Reuters)

CINCINNATI?Headlining a rally on the opening day of the college football season, Mitt Romney sprinkled his stump speech Saturday with sports analogies, arguing it's time to put a "new coach" on the field to get America back in the game.

Speaking at a rally inside a historic train station here, Romney reminded his audience of President Barack Obama's 2008 Democratic National Convention speech, telling supporters "he didn't keep a lot of promises."

"One of the promises he made was he was going to create more jobs, and today, there are 23 million people out of work or have stopped looking for work or underemployed," Romney said. "Let me tell you: If you have a coach that's zero and 23 million, you say it's time to get a new coach."

As a crowd of a few thousand people let out a roar of approval, Romney added, "It's time for America to see a winning season again, and we are going to bring it to them."

It was Romney's first stop in Ohio since officially claiming the GOP nomination. His running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, is also in the state?attending a football game at his alma mater Miami University, which is playing in-state rival Ohio State University.

Romney argued that he was the person who can deliver on creating new jobs and turning the economy around.

"We recognize what a great responsibility you've given us. How much you expect from us to be able to get back the White House and get America back on track," Romney said. "We've seen these last four years a lot of disappointment; a lot of families having a hard time? These are tough times for the American people, and added to all that is the divisiveness and bitterness we've seen from the president's campaign."

Romney said America "is a story of the many becoming one and accomplishing extraordinary things because of our unity" and implied he would be the person who could bring the country back together.

From here, Romney heads back to Florida, where he'll hold a joint rally with Ryan in Jacksonville.

Shock Levels Of Child ObesityYour Health Journal | Your Health ...

From The Hartlepool Mail?..

SHOCK new figures reveal a quarter of Hartlepool youngsters are classed as obese by the time they leave primary school.

Health chiefs say child obesity rates in town, which are higher than the national average, provide one of the ?biggest threats? to the future of health in Hartlepool.

Obese youngsters risk high blood pressure, heart disease, type two diabetes and some forms of cancer when they are older if they do not shed the pounds.

As well as the physical problems, health chiefs say children that are overweight and obese can also experience low self-esteem, anxiety and depression.

Officials say there is a rising trend nationally and that the problem isn?t unique to Hartlepool, but admit it is a huge concern.

Hartlepool youngsters top the obesity tables in the Tees Valley, with a quarter of Year 6 pupils classed as obese in 2010-11.

That compares with 21.8 per cent of Middlesbrough youngsters, 18.7 per cent in Redcar and Cleveland and 20.6 per cent in Stockton.

Carole Johnson, head of health improvement at NHS Hartlepool, said: ?This is one of the biggest threats to the future health in Hartlepool.

?The figures are alarming but unfortunately they are not a great shock.

?We are aware of the trend nationally but what is important is what we do about it because research shows excess weight in childhood continues into adulthood.

?We all know the feeling when you start to put a bit of weight on, you don?t feel good about yourself and it can lead to low self-esteem and anxiety.?

Every child in Hartlepool is weighed and measured when they are in the reception class, aged four to five, and when they are in Year Six, aged 10 to 11.

In 2010-11, the percentage of reception aged children classed as overweight was 13.5 per cent, compared to 12.5 per cent of Year 6 pupils.

But figures also show that 10 per cent of reception children are classed as obese, which then rockets to 25.9 per cent in Year 6.

Health officials put the shocking figures down to a number of factors and say there is no quick fix.

Possible reasons put forward include low breast-feeding rates in Hartlepool, socio economic reasons including low income, family history and medical reasons.

Other factors include youngsters not doing enough exercise, eating too many take aways and fast food while even low literacy rates can contribute.

Hartlepool has one of the lowest breastfeeding rates in the country, with high proportions of new mums opting to bottle feed.

Mrs Johnson added: ?It has to be a long term plan and it won?t be something that improves over night.

?We are really trying to push the breast feeding agenda at the moment because a child that is breast fed is less likely to be obese and overweight.
