(AP) ? The head of the Arab League warned Friday that Syria may be sliding toward civil war, as security forces fired on thousands of people who poured into the streets in support of army defectors who switched sides to try to topple President Bashar Assad. At least 10 people were killed, activists said.

Also Friday, an activist group said two foreign journalists and a translator were arrested in the Syrian capital, Damascus. The group, the Local Coordination Committees, had no further details. The government has barred access to the country by most foreign media, except on a limited number of escorted trips.

Over the course of the 10-month-old uprising, much of the bloodshed has been from security forces firing on unarmed protesters. But in recent months breakaway soldiers have been attacking the Syrian military, and some opposition members have taken up arms against the regime, adding to the violence.

Despite that, Assad appears to maintain a firm grip on power in the face of growing international pressure to halt his crackdown and step down.

The Arab League chief, Nabil Elaraby, told The Associated Press that Assad's regime was either not complying or only partially complying with an Arab League plan that Syria signed last month to end its crackdown.

"We are very concerned because there were certain commitments that were not complied with," he said in Cairo, where the League is based. "If this continues, it may turn into civil war."

The U.N. estimates more than 5,000 people have been killed since the uprising began in March.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said more than 20,000 people were demonstrating Friday in the northwestern province of Idlib. Security forces fired on protesters there as well as in the southern province of Daraa, the eastern region of Deir el-Zour and the central province of Homs, all centers of frequent protests.

At least 10 people were killed, the Observatory said.

A video posted online by activists showed dozens of people marching in the Damascus neighborhood of Midan, chanting "Freedom forever, despite you Assad!" Midan, which has seen frequent anti-regime protests, was hit by a suicide attack last Friday that killed 26 people.

It wasn't clear who was behind that attack; the government blamed "terrorists" while the opposition suggested the regime orchestrated the blast to tarnish the uprising.

Another video posted Friday showed what appeared to be an armored personnel carrier on fire. The narrator said army defectors attacked the vehicle with a rocket-propelled grenade.

The Arab League plan calls for removing Syrian forces and heavy weapons from city streets, starting talks with opposition leaders and allowing human rights workers and journalists into the country.

An Arab League team of observers began work in Syria on Dec. 27 to offer an outside view of whether the government is abiding by its agreement to end the military crackdown on dissent.

The mission has been plagued by problems, including accusations that the Syrian government is interfering with the team's work. This week, one of the observers resigned and told the pan-Arab TV channel Al-Jazeera that the monitor mission was a "farce" because of Syrian government control.

Adnan al-Khudeir, head of the Cairo operations room to which the monitors report, told reporters Thursday that two more observers, from Algeria and Sudan, would be returning to their home countries. He did not identify them but said the Algerian gave health reasons and the Sudanese cited personal reasons.

Samsung Series 9 monitor and all-in-one eyes-on

After spotting a powered-off Series 9 display at a CES press event earlier this week, we told you we'd revisit it if we could actually show you that 27-inch, 2560 x 1440 panel in all its billion-color glory. Well, folks, here she is. Samsung's first PLS display for the consumer market is arriving in March or April for $1,199, and is arriving with a refreshed design that trades last year's slick surfaces for an aluminum base. We'll let those hands-on photos speak for themselves, but hopefully from where you're sitting you can still appreciate those wide viewing angles, deep blacks and rich colors.

And what of last year's Series 9 monitor? Samsung recycled the glossy, asymmetrical design, added a slot-loading Blu-ray drive and turned it into a high-end all-in-one. The 27-inch display has 1080p resolution, and the same kind of Ultra Clear panel Samsung uses in its televisions to make sure that glossy finish isn't too reflective. And though Samsung doesn't have too many specs to share, we know it has a quad-core Core i7 CPU, 8GB of RAM, a TV tuner and an unspecified AMD graphics card with 1GB of video memory. As you'd expect, it also comes with a wireless mouse and keyboard, the latter of which has some surprisingly cushy keys, given the island layout and all. No word on pricing or availability, though a Samsung rep told us the company has no plans to bring this stateside.

(AP) ? It was a daily reminder of the death of her father in a British industrial accident ? but a mother of two says she feels relief after she was given the chance to demolish the factory where he was killed.

Sarah Griffiths won a competition to lead the demolition Sunday of a tower owned by Campbell's Soup food manufacturer. It was the site where her father Mick Locke was fatally scalded in 1995 in a steam accident.

After she triggered the series of explosions which downed the factory in King's Lynn, eastern England, the 41-year-old Griffiths said the event had given her a "chance of closure."

She said the tower has been "a constant reminder that I have been robbed of my dad."

The site was being cleared for a new commercial and retail development.

Valentino's New Rich Volumes (Fashion Wire Daily)

Florence ? Get ready for a new era of boom times in men's fashion. A whole slew of high level brands are now investing huge sums in menswear; a major league bet based on the belief that a generation of millions of men in Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) markets are about to spend large sums on building proper gentlemanly wardrobes.

The signs are abundantly clear - LVMH, the world's biggest luxury conglomerate - will launch the tony shoemaker Berluti as a fully fledged men's brand in 10 days time in Paris; while its biggest rival PPR completed the acquisition of famed Italian tailor Brioni this week, ushering in a new era this weekend in the Milan menswear runway season.

But on Wednesday, Jan. 11, in Florence, all eyes were on the house of Valentino, which staged its first men's show in a half decade - what turned out to be a hyper sophisticated display of voluminous tailoring, edgy juxtaposition and brilliant use of bonded materials.

The show, staged in the faded glory of the beautiful Palazzo Corsini, whose Renaissance frescos have a ghostly charm due to being washed out by the 1966 flood of the Arno, making it an ideally opulent setting for this print free collection. Before a giant LED screen and audience dotted with scores of Tuscan nobility, Valentino's designers Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri sent out a gutsy collection - with subtly voluminous silhouette used in a garments that combined athletic sportswear elements with haute gamme tailoring.

The show opened with a half dozen curvy-shouldered coats in the duo's signature masculine obsession of mixing fabrics - most notably felt wool torsos with lambskin sleeves. These were all paired with slim fitted pants with darts, exactly the sort that Roman-born Piccioli himself wears.

But the standouts included mini cabans in combinations of knit cashmere fronts with felted cashmere shoulders and arms, or a sensational spy trench coat in deerskin bonded over denim. A palette of ink, deep sea blue and anthracite suggested a moody midnight in Rome, the brand's hometown. Above all, there was a great sense of designer's targeting a modern consumer keen for classy sophistication but also open to path breaking silhouettes and tailoring.

Not all the accessories worked and there were a tad too many micro suits in moss green, lending a minimalist leprechaun air to the show. But, over all, this was a smart meeting of Italian savoir faire and intelligently experimental design.

"Modern sophistication," commented Piccioli taking his bow in a palace on the other side of the Arno from where Valentino staged his very first runway show almost exactly a half-century ago.

Lenovo puts Android 4 on 55-inch TV and 10-inch tablet

Lenovo announced plans today to release an Android 4-powered smart TV, an Android 4 10-inch tablet, and a new smartphone, along with its own cloud-based data services. The company is calling the 55-inch TV the first to run the Android 4 operating system.

The smart TV, imaginatively named the K91, has a 1080p IPS display, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and a built-in 5-megapixel camera to support face recognition. In addition to stock Android 4, the K91 will also run a second interface Lenovo calls ?the Sandwich UI? which can handle video on demand, ?Internet apps,? and regular TV programming. According to a press release, the TV will be controllable through speech as well as with a compatible tablet or smartphone. Photos of the TV?s remote have not been released, but it will have a touchpad, 5 directional keys, and a motion sensor.

Lenovo?s new tablet, the IdeaTab S2, will also run Android 4 on a 1.5GHz dual-core processor with 1GB of RAM and 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB storage options. The device measures 8.69 millimeters thick and weighs 1.27 pounds?about a tenth of a pound less than the iPad 2. The 10-inch IPS display has a resolution of 1280x800, and the tablet will be able to connect to both WiFi and 3G.

While the specs are solid, the most attractive thing about the IdeaTab S2 is one of its accessories: a keyboard dock made for the IdeaTab S2 that includes a second battery to provide up to 20 total hours of use (Lenovo did not provide battery estimates without the dock).

The tablet design is similar to the recently released Asus Transformer Prime, though the IdeaTab S2 lacks the Transformer Prime?s quad-core Tegra 3 processor. Jeffrey Witt, a spokesperson for Lenovo, told Ars that the tablet will be sold bundled with the dock in some regions, while it will come as a separate item in others.

The Lenovo IdeaTab S2 and its dock

The smartphone, dubbed Smartphone S2, is similar in dimension and design to the company?s older LePhone. Behind the 3.8-inch 800x480 display is a 1.4GHz single-core processor and a configurable 512MB/1GB of memory and 8GB/16GB of storage; the back side has an 8-megapixel camera. The phone runs Android 2.3, rounding out its behind-the-times profile, with no plans to bring in Android 4. Barring a very reasonable price or impressive UI overlay, there?s not much to see here.

Lenovo intends to tie all of these devices together with its new ?Personal Cloud? services, which will allow users to flow data between all the devices. Personal Cloud will have ?some free service,? but other aspects will cost money, said Witt.

These products are all immediately available in China and will launch worldwide ?at a later date,? according to Lenovo. Price information was not available for any of the devices or services.

Earlier this week, Lenovo announced several new notebook PCs, including the business ultrabook T430u and the X1 hybrid with Instant Media Mode that can make use of an additional low-power processor.

Ars will be handling all these products, alongside many others, at the Consumer Electronics Show this week. Stay tuned for more news and hands-on coverage.
