'Plants vs. Zombies 2' will eat your brains next spring

4 hrs.

The world's most adorable flora and their equally adorable?zombie nemesis will be making a return during the?next growing season. That is:?"Plants vs Zombies 2" is in the works and due to launch in the spring of 2013.

Casual gaming giant?PopCap (maker?of the?"Bejeweled" and "Peggle" games)?announced Monday that a sequel to its?enormously popular tower defense game "Plants vs. Zombies" is in?development.

The respected?development?company, which was bought by Electronic Arts last year?for a whopping $1.3 billion, didn't reveal any details about the?highly anticipated ?game other than that?the sequel "will feature hordes of new plant and zombie types and mulch more."

PopCap originally launched "Plants vs. Zombies" on the PC back in May 2009, earning rave reviews from both casual and hardcore gamers alike thanks to its offbeat sense of humor, gameplay that was easy to jump into yet hard to master and insanely catchy theme song. It went on to become hugely popular smartphone and tablet apps as well.

The game, which has inspired countless fan-made?YouTube tributes, finds players trying to defend their home from waves of incoming zombies by planting a variety of undead-fighting flora around the house.

Monday's press release was short on details but did include this quote from an "unidentified spokesperson:"

"Spring is crullest curlie ungood time, and plantz grow dull roots.?So, we are meating you for brainz at yore house. No worry to skedule schedlue plan... we're freee anytime. We'll find you."?

While you're waiting for your next "PvZ" fix to arrive, PopCap has just launched an online store filled with adorable goodies for you to peruse and purchase. (I want. I want.) Meanwhile, PopCap plans to launch a "Talking Zombatar" pet-zombie app?later this year.
