White shark diets vary with age and among individuals

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Many white sharks shift from fish to marine mammals as they mature, but individual sharks show surprising variability in dietary preferences.

White sharks, the largest predatory sharks in the ocean, are thought of as apex predators that feed primarily on seals and sea lions. But a new study by researchers at the University of California, Santa Cruz, shows surprising variability in the dietary preferences of individual sharks.

The researchers described their findings in a paper published online September 28 in PLoS ONE. They analyzed the composition of growth bands in shark vertebrae to trace variations in diet over a shark's lifetime. Stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen incorporated into an animal's tissues serve as a natural tracer of dietary inputs.

"We did find that white shark diets changed with age, as expected, but we were surprised that the patterns and extent of change differed among individuals," said Sora Kim, who led the study as a UCSC graduate student and is now at the University of Wyoming.

The researchers analyzed vertebrae of 15 adult white sharks that had been caught along the west coast (14 off California and one off Baja California). Sharks in this population consume a wide range of prey, including seals, sea lions, dolphins, fish, and squid. But not every shark eats the same mix of prey, said coauthor Paul Koch, professor of Earth and planetary sciences at UCSC.

"We confirmed that the diets of many individuals observed at seal and sea lion rookeries shift from fish to marine mammals as the sharks mature," he said. "In addition, we discovered that different individual sharks may specialize on different types of prey. These two types of flexibility in feeding behavior are difficult to document using traditional methods, but may be very important for understanding how the population is supported by the eastern Pacific ecosystem and how it may respond to changes in that ecosystem."

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recently announced that it will consider whether to protect the west coast population of white sharks under the Endangered Species Act.

Tagging studies have shown that the white sharks found along the California coast have a regular migratory pattern, cruising coastal sites from late summer to early winter and moving to offshore areas during the rest of the year. While sharks within this population may have predictable movement patterns, the new study shows that there are important dietary and behavioral differences among individual sharks.

The study relied on vertebrae obtained from white shark specimens in various collections. The sharks had been caught at different times and places along the coast from 1957 to 2000. "Interestingly, we do see a small shift in diet as marine mammal populations increased after the passage of the Marine Mammal Protection Act in 1972," Kim said.

In addition to Kim and Koch, the coauthors of the paper include James Estes, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at UCSC, and Tim Tinker, a biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey and adjunct professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at UCSC. This research was funded by the National Science Foundation.

AceReader Pro Deluxe / Pro Deluxe Plus 8.1.0 | 10.94 MB & 12.42 MB

AceReader is referred to as: Reading Improvement Software; Reading Assessment Software; Productivity Reading Tool; Self-Improvement Educational Reading Tool; Speed Reading Software. Teachers often say? ?Finally I found a modern day software version of a Tachistoscope machine used years ago to pace eye movement.? It can be used to: (1) assess your current reading level; (2) improve your reading speed and comprehension, both online and offline; and (3) help you read faster while on the computer, by utilizing special display modes. In today?s fast-paced information age, it is more important than ever to be a proficient reader. Everyone from high-powered executives to children just learning to read in grade school can benefit from AceReader. Our goal is to help you read faster, while maintaining or even improving your comprehension. When you accomplish this, reading becomes like watching a movie. It becomes fun to read because you?re able to absorb more material in a shorter amount of time. In short, it leads to more success and a better overall quality of life. Like anything, it takes practice. AceReader is not designed to teach you how to read, but instead focuses on helping you be more proficient at your reading both on and off the computer.

AceReader Pro
AceReader Pro includes Tests, Drills, and Games designed to assess and improve your reading skills. The program allows you to have the level of control that suits your needs. It includes three methods of operation: Course Mode, Menu Mode, and Expert Mode. The Course Mode leads you through a self-adjusting and personalized training process. The Menu Mode lets you pick-and-choose from a menu list of training activities. The Expert Mode allows you to have full control by letting you load your own material from the clipboard or documents (i.e. Web pages, e-mails, .pdf files, .doc files) and letting you manually set the display modes and speed settings.

This version is recommended for employees who want to run personal copies of the program on their own computer. AceReader Pro can empower your employees and can be used for self-improvement and productivity purposes.

The Tests, Drills, and Games will improve your employees? reading speed and efficiency, both on and off the computer.

The Expert Mode provides employees with a powerful reading tool that allows them to read more efficiently while on the computer (i.e. e-mails, .pdf, .doc, and other text documents). Certain display modes allow them to read with minimum eye movement, which many people find to be more efficient. Other modes allow complete thoughts to display at a time with controlled speeds. By utilizing these advanced display modes, AceReader Pro will help your employees read more efficiently both on and off the computer.

The optional Text-To-Speech add-on allows your employees to ?listen? instead of to ?read? (i.e. e-mails, .pdf, and other documents). Employees can multi-task and can also take that much-needed break from reading; this also helps avoid eye strain and fatigue.

AceReader Pro Deluxe Plus
(Single Station Business Edition)
This version includes all the features of the Deluxe version (listed above) but can handle an unlimited number of employees on a stand-alone non-networked computers (i.e. in a human resource training area).

25 Conversation Starters That Will Spice up Your Family Mealtime

Jeff Smith is editorial manager of Awana. He and his wife have two daughters, ages 9 and 10, in the Awana T&T club. Jeff has written three curriculum books for Awana.

?How was your day??

?Good.?

?What did you do??

?Nothin?.?

?Who did you play with??

?Hannah.?

?Did you have fun??

?Yes.?

?Do anything else??

?No.?

?All-righty.?

That was a recent?exchange with my older daughter. Sound familiar? After a busy school year, dinner?discussions can screech to a halt in the summer. This is especially true as the older our kids get, the less they want to share.

Because of this, I searched online for conversation starters that would:

1. Interest everyone
2. Promote spiritual growth in my children
3. Strengthen family relationships
4. Develop my children?s communication and critical-thinking skills
5. Force my kids to say more than two words at a time!

The result? Below is a list of 25 mealtime conversation starters from Suite 101, Conversation Starters, Fatherhood and Great Schools. I hope they?ll spice up your family?s table talk?? and mine.

1. What is your favorite thing we do together as a family? Why?

2. Describe your perfect day. Where would you be, who would you be with, and what would you be doing?

3. What was the nicest thing you did for someone else today? What was the nicest thing that someone else did for you today?

4. If you could ask God one question, what would it be?

5. What are the qualities that make a good friend (good family discussion)?

6. How did you use our word of the day? (One dad introduces a ?word of the day? each dinner. He defines it and asks his kids to use it the next day in a conversation. The kids share at the next family dinner how they used the word, then get a new word.)

7. Which of Jesus? miracles in the Bible is your favorite? Why?

8. Does our family seem too busy? What should we change to be less so?

9. What can our family pray for you this week?

10. What were the highs and lows of your day today?

11. What?s the funniest thing you heard, saw or happened to you this week?

12. What have you learned this week from reading God?s Word?

13. What?s one thing you learned today?

14. What three blessings are you most grateful for? Why did you pick those three?

15. Have you heard people talk about God?s grace? What do you think that means? Can you think of any Bible stories that help us understand what God?s grace is like?

16. What was the best thing that happened to you today? The worst?

17. As a family, let?s think of 10 ways someone can show kindness to others at home, work, church or school.

18. In 60 seconds, tell us as much about your day as you can.

19. If you could be any Bible person for a day, who would it be? Why?

Spain, Portugal hit with anti-austerity protests

Spain's Treasury Minister Cristobal Montoro shows his papers reading "expenses of ministries get down 8.5 %" during during a news conference at Parliament in Madrid, Spain , Saturday, Sept. 29 , 2012. Spain's public debt will reach 90.5% of its gross domestic product in 2013 with new austerity budget, according to government documents. Spain also raised the forecast for this year to 85.5% from the 79.8% originally forecast. Finance Minister Cristobal Montoro spoke after presenting the 2013 draft budget that the government announced Thursday would cut overall spending by euro 40 billion ($51 billion). Protestors hold a banner reading "you don't represent us" during a demonstration against austerity measures announced by the Spanish government in Madrid, Spain, Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012. Spain's Parliament has taken on the appearance of a heavily guarded fortress with dozens of police blocking access from every possible angle, hours ahead of a protest against the conservative government's handling of the economic crisis. The demonstration, organized behind the slogan 'Occupy Congress,' is expected to draw thousands of people who call for Parliament to be dissolved and fresh elections held, claiming the government's austerity measures show the ruling Popular Party misled voters to get elected last November. (AP Photo/Andres Kudacki)

(AP) ? Thousands of Portuguese enduring deep economic pain from austerity cuts took to the streets Saturday in protest, and Spanish demonstrators outraged over similar measures were preparing to approach parliament for the third time this week to vent their anger against tax hikes, government spending cuts and the highest unemployment rate among the 17 nations that use the euro currency.

In Lisbon, retired banker Antonio Trinidade said the budget cuts Portugal is locked into in return for the nation's ?78 billion ($101 billion) bailout are making the country's economy the worst he has seen in his lifetime. His pension has been cut, and he said countless young Portuguese are increasingly heading abroad because they can't make a living at home.

"The government and the troika controlling what we do because of the bailout just want to cut more and more and rob from us," Trinidade said, referring to the troika of creditors ?the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund. "The young don't have any future, and the country is on the edge of an abyss. I'm getting toward the end of my life, but these people in their 20s or 30s don't have jobs, or a future."

In Spain, marchers were preparing to again head toward parliament, where Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has an absolute majority and has pushed through waves of austerity measures over the last nine months ? trying to prevent Spain from being forced into the same kind of bailout taken by Portugal, Ireland and Greece.

The protests near Spain's parliament turned violent Tuesday and Wednesday nights when protesters clashed with riot police, who barricaded entry to the streets surrounding government buildings. Dozens of people were arrested and injured.

On Friday, Rajoy's administration presented a 2013 draft budget that will cut overall spending by ?40 billion ($51.7 billion), freezing the salaries of public workers, cutting spending for unemployment benefits and even reducing spending for Spain's royal family next year by 4 percent.

Investors worried about Spain's economic viability have forced up the interest rate they are willing to pay to buy Spanish bonds. The country's banks hurting from a property boom that went bust are set to get help soon from a ?100 billion ($129 billion) financial lifeline from the eurozone, and Rajoy is pondering whether to ask for help from the ECB to buy Spanish bonds.

Finance Minister Cristobal Montoro said Saturday that the budget cuts for next year were necessary to ease market tensions and try to bring down high interest rates Spain must pay to get investors to buy its bonds.

Snedeker to get early baptism in Ryder Cup

MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) ? Davis Love III sent out his hottest player. Jose Maria Olazabal went with his strongest teams. The Ryder Cup captains had the same objectives Thursday when they announced their teams for the opening sessions at Medinah.

Win points, the sooner the better.

"We have to go for it," Olazabal said. "I know we are playing away. The crowds are going to be on their side. They set up the course to their liking. At the end of the day, you have to make a bunch of birdies out there to win points. So just send the best players out there and see if they can perform well, and manage to win those points."

The foursomes lineup would seem to favor Europe.

Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy, the best player in golf, will lead off Friday morning against Jim Furyk and Brandt Snedeker, who is coming off a sterling four weeks that led to his Tour Championship win five days ago and the FedEx Cup title.

Snedeker describes himself as "jumpy," and Love found it important to get his fastest player out early.

"We wanted to get Brandt going," Love said.

In doing so, he became the third straight American captain to send out a Ryder Cup rookie in the leadoff match. Dustin Johnson was in the opening match at Wales, and Anthony Kim went out first at Valhalla. Both of them played with Phil Mickelson.

Mickelson is in the second game with Keegan Bradley, and they face the tough task of trying to be the first team to beat Luke Donald and Sergio Garcia, who are 4-0 in foursomes. Garcia has never lost in alternate shot. His record is 8-0-1.

"They are two very good players and it will be a tough match, but they are also two players that sometimes might not always hit it straight," Garcia said. "But we are just going to focus on our own games and hopefully we can win the point for Europe."

Bradley referred to Garcia and Donald as "legends in the Ryder Cup."

It will be the first time since 1995 that the Americans did not have either Mickelson or Tiger Woods in the leadoff match. Woods is the anchor this time with Steve Stricker, with whom he has a 6-2 record in the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup. Their last two outings, however, ended badly ? a 6-and-5 loss to Donald and Lee Westwood at Wales in 2010, and a record 7-and-6 loss to Adam Scott and K.J. Choi in the Presidents Cup last November.

Woods and Stricker will play Ian Poulter and Justin Rose. Poulter is 8-3 in the Ryder Cup, though two of those losses were to Woods in team matches. Both of those matches were fourballs, where Woods has a stronger record.

Woods and Rose share the same swing coach in Sean Foley.

"There are no easy games in the Ryder Cup, but from a crowd perspective, if we do manage to go out there and get a point, it could be one of those huge swing-and-momentum moments," Rose said. "I think we go into this game with nothing to lose."

In the third slot are Westwood and Francesco Molinari against Zach Johnson and Jason Dufner, the third American rookie who will be in the opening session.

Both captains said all week the tough part would be figuring out who to leave out ? every player at Medinah is inside the top 35 in the world. Olazabal elected to bench Paul Lawrie, Martin Kaymer, Peter Hanson and Nicolas Colsaerts, the only rookie on Europe's side. Love sat out the pairing of Webb Simpson and Bubba Watson, and Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar.

"We have four on the bench. We're going to have to get them in the game," Love said.

Love said he would see how the matches progressed Friday morning before deciding on his next move for fouballs in the afternoon, though he sounded resolved to stick with the plan he has mapped out for the Americans, who have lost six of the last eight times in the Ryder Cup. And the North Carolina alum even mentioned a basketball coaching great.

"Dean Smith just ran his offense and he ran it and he ran it and he ran it until the game was over; and I think that's what we are going to do," Love said. "We have got a plan, we have some great players and we are just going to let them play until we run out of holes. I think everybody around me seems to feel like we have a pretty good plan."

US, Mexico in food fight over tomatoes: How messy will it get?

American tomato growers, upset at Mexico's growing share of the US market, are taking steps that could lead to new tariffs on Mexican tomatoes. Mexico's ambassador threatened retaliation.?

By Ron Scherer,?Staff writer / September 28, 2012

Tomatoes grow in a hothouse in San Luis de la Paz, Mexico, in February 2012.

Melanie Stetson Freeman/The Christian Science Monitor

The tomato, one of America?s favorite vegetables, is the focus of a burgeoning cross-border food fight that Mexican officials say could escalate into a broader trade war.

Mexican exporters currently supply about half the tomatoes consumed in the US. American growers, upset over what they see as a steady incursion of low priced Mexican produce, are trying to quash a deal that has kept the price of Mexican tomatoes low. The move could lead either to new tariffs on Mexican tomatoes or an agreement by the Mexicans to sell their produce at higher prices.

The Mexican government is threatening retaliation if the US tacks on any new tariffs.

?If Mexico?s interests end up being affected, Mexico will respond,? said Arturo Sarukhan, the Mexican ambassador to the US in a statement. ?When Mexico aims, Mexico hits the target.?

What does this mean for US consumers? Whether the US action results in higher tomato prices is hard to say. In public filings over the issue, large buyers of tomatoes, such as Wal-Mart, worry that any disruption of a stable and predictable supply of tomatoes from Mexico will hinder their ability to provide consistent pricing to the US consumer.

But the US growers say those fears are unfounded, maintaining that the US has the ability to grow enough tomatoes to keep every salad bar stocked at a reasonable price.

?I don?t anticipate consumer prices will be impacted significantly at all,? says Reggie Brown, executive vice president of the Florida Tomato Exchange, which represents growers there.

The Mexican government, meanwhile, is deeply suspicious over the timing of the tomato flap since it involves growers from politically sensitive Florida. Mexico?s minister of the economy, Bruno Ferrari, told Reuters this week it was ?obvious? the request was timed to put political pressure on the White House ahead of the election.

Over the last several months, the Obama administration has become more aggressive in charging importers with dumping. This summer the US charged Chinese companies with unfair trade actions regarding cars and auto parts. The president touted that trade action while campaigning in Ohio, but Mitt Romney called it too little too late. Romney says he would get tough on China regarding trade issues if elected president.

Breast cancer changed patient's life ?for the better? ? Colorado ...

In January 2011, Jeanne Bohm had no idea that her life was about to change for the better.

It had been nearly eight years since ?the love of her life? had passed away unexpectedly. Jeanne was living in Montana and hanging out with the wrong crowd, when out of the blue she found a lump in her breast.

?I went to my doctor right away,? says Jeanne. ?He knew instantly that it was cancer.?

Raymond Wentz Foundation Benefit ConcertJeanne was diagnosed with stage 3B inflammatory breast cancer, a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer that had already spread to her lymph nodes. Knowing she needed her family?s help, she headed home to Colorado, where her mother and sisters lived. At the time, Jeanne?s relationship with her mother was estranged.

?Getting treatment in Colorado was my first priority,? Jeanne says. ?I searched the internet and was really impressed by what the University of Colorado Cancer Center offered. It seemed all of their staff?s right hands knew what their left hands were doing.?

Shortly after moving in with her sister, Jeanne started chemotherapy. In September 2011, she had a mastectomy to remove the diseased breast and surrounding lymph nodes. After recovering from surgery, she underwent months of additional chemotherapy and radiation.

A year later, she is cancer free.

?At first the doctors didn?t know if they could fix me,? Jeanne says. ?Now, they can?t find any cancer.?

?The cancer changed my life. I don?t care that I don?t have a breast,? she continues. ?At age 57, I?ve enjoyed reconnecting with my mother, getting closer with my sister and spending time together. My life has changed for the better.?

Cancer free but not worry free

Although Jeanne is cancer free, she?s been living with multiple sclerosis since 1982, making it difficult for her to walk and work. The little income she receives each month from social security barely covers her rent and living expenses, let alone two rent payments?one in Montana and one in Colorado.

Through Lindsey Martinez, a CU Cancer Center social worker at University of Colorado Hospital, Jeanne was able to apply for a grant from the Raymond Wentz Foundation. The Raymond Wentz Foundation awards small grants to help lessen the financial struggles experienced by cancer patients in Colorado.

Since 2002, the Foundation has awarded nearly $1.5 million in emergency financial assistance to 2,500 cancer patients in 51 counties throughout Colorado. In July 2012, Jeanne received a check for $750 to help cover her rent.

?I hadn?t seen that much money for years,? Jeanne says. ?I was humbled and blown away by the money. It made all the difference. It helped pay my rent for a month until I could get up to Montana to clean out my old apartment.?

Her story is not unlike many other cancer patients in Colorado.

Every month a volunteer panel of healthcare professionals meet to review dozens of patient applications and help guide the Raymond Wentz Foundation on patients? eligibility. However, the Foundation can?t meet all of the needs without community support.

On Oct. 26, 2012, the Foundation is hosting a Rocky For Raymond benefit concert with Big Head Todd and the Monsters at the Soiled Dove Underground. Tickets are $150 with a small number of VIP seats available. All proceeds benefit patients like Jeanne, who need a little financial assistance while undergoing cancer treatment.

Tickets are available at www.raymondwentz.org.

?So many other people need the same kind of help,? Jeanne says. ?We just need more people to open their hearts to give to those in need.?

?The Raymond Wentz Foundation has helped me immensely. There?s no way I wouldn?t want to return the favor.?

Balancing your work and family time | Baby Budgeting

Guest Post

Trying to achieve a balance between career and family time is a day-to-day process of juggling responsibilities at work with the needs of family members at home. The balance between the two changes constantly and the key to succeeding is to take a step back periodically, in order to analyse how things are and decide what, if any, changes need to be made. The most important thing is to find ways to achieve and maintain a balance that works best for the individual family and situation.

Tips for balancing work and family time

There are almost as many different ways to help achieve balance and harmony between the work and home environments as there are families. However, here are a few suggestions that may encourage and foster a good balance between the two worlds.

Organisation is often the first casualty of a working home. Organising not only the home and work environment, but also taking the time to decide what tasks need to be completed each day and when, should eliminate much of the frustration that results from leaving them unfinished. It will also ensure that time for the family is set aside every day, even if it has to be scheduled.

Balance in the home and at work also relies on making sure that everyone does his or her share of the chores.? Learning how to delegate effectively will free up more time for family. Children, in particular, will benefit from having jobs that they are responsible for around the house. Offering positive reinforcement and non-monetary incentives will teach the important concept that well-done work yields just rewards for the individual concerned.

Being flexible about the day?s structure and what does and does not get done will also reduce stress. It is difficult to be focused and balanced when stress is involved, so finding ways to alleviate it or prevent it from occurring is always a bonus.

Busy work and home lives mean that finding time for quiet and solitude is extremely difficult. A little personal or ?me? time is very important, however and everyone needs to enjoy a period of quality time, even if only for an hour, when they can rest, relax and recharge.

?

Finding help to balance work and home life

Small business owners may find achieving the correct balance between home and family and what goes on at work difficult. For many, the stresses of running a business and handling finances on such a large scale leaves little time for anything else. Issues such as handling payroll, taxes and debts can occupy enormous amounts of time and are often extremely stressful.

One way to overcome this problem, which many small business owners have embraced, is to employ the services of an umbrella company. An umbrella company functions on behalf of the business owner, taking over the responsibility of dealing with financial and accounting issues, such as calculating and handling the distribution of pay checks, deducting the correct amount of tax and seeing to it that the appropriate agencies are paid. In addition the company will chase creditors for money owing and pay outstanding debts to suppliers.

Samsung smartphones and tablets to appear on the X Factor

Android Central

It seems that sponsoring the Olympics wasn't enough for Samsung. The South Korean company has reportedly signed a deal for their smartphones and tablets to appear on the X Factor UK starting this Saturday, Sept. 29.

The new partnership will also see online advertising on the X Factor website in the form of Samsung banners and in addition there will be a dedicated Android application for the Samsung Galaxy Note II.

Samsung Electronics UK and Ireland head of brand and communications Avikar Jolly said: “We’re excited to be working with ITV and FremantleMedia Enterprises on this partnership for The X Factor. We pride ourselves on our devices being innovative and industry-leading so the fact this is a ‘first’ fits perfectly with our own ethos and ambitions as a brand.”

ITV sales director Mark Trinder said: “We are delighted to be working with Samsung and this initiative is a key part of a wider and integrated multiplatform partnership. Editorial integrity remains at the heart of what we do, and we feel this is an excellent brand fit.”

the X Factor has a huge audience in the UK, so it'll be interesting to see how 'in your face' the product placement will be. Any crazy tie-in ideas? Shout out in the comments.

Domestic stock market turns unattractive to foreign funds ...

Foreign capital inflow into Vietnam through investment funds and big securities firms has dipped remarkably while the existing funds here are approaching maturity, piling more pressure on the country?s poor-performing stock market.

At the Investors Day 2010, Andy Ho, managing director of VinaCapital, said the group intended to set up two new funds of US$200-300 million each, with one for investment in real estate and the other for investment in the stock market.

However, the plan has not fully materialized. VinaCapital has been able to mobilize capital for the property investment fund, and has found it very difficult to do so with the stock investment fund, Ho told the Daily.

It is simply because foreign investors always see whether the macro economy has regained stability and if they could gain profit, while Vietnam is not yet out of the woods. Therefore, investors will choose big markets with smoother capital circulation and more opportunities than Vietnam.

Established in 2007, Saigon Asset Management (SAM) investment fund went through the overheated growth period of Vietnam?s stock market with the VN-Index hitting 1,100 points and also witnessed this index falling below 400 points. The stocks owned by SAM back then has dropped 80-90% in value, so the fund?s performance in Vietnam is not as good as expected, said Nguyen The Lu, general director of SAM.

He said the net asset value of the investment fund had been plunging. In October, SAM will hold a shareholders meeting to decide whether to close the fund or not.

?Many investors have been mulling withdrawing from the local market but the heavy losses have made them hesitant. They expect stock prices would bounce back,? said Lu. ?Therefore, in October, many investors may vote whether or not to close the fund.?

Raising new capital is getting more difficult, said Lu. Investors will take into account the impact of the macroeconomic factors on their investments.

If investment funds generated lower profits than savings interest rates, they would not make investments. As the domestic banking system is being restructured, and concerns about a return of inflation are still there to stay, it is not easy to lure foreign investment capital.

Dinh Quang Hoan, financial consultant director of Ban Viet Securities Company, confirmed this fact, saying that not so many foreign investors want to buy shares for financial investment in Vietnam. They are waiting for economic restructuring.

Hoan noted most investors had bought stocks of local firms active in the same industry as theirs to quickly expand their operations. This is the reason why merger and acquisition (M&A) activity has grown strongly this year.

Hoan said some companies had asked his firm to provide consultancy on investment in major companies in Vietnam. Quite a few M&A deals are worth US$100 million each.

A senior source from a big securities company said he knew many investment funds that had incurred great losses in the stock market, urging them to divest capital. On the other hand, no new investors have entered Vietnam?s stock market.

He said the stock market had remained flat since the start of this year as there was a lack of policy breakthroughs.

Robotic surgery through the mouth safe for removing tumors of the voice box, study shows

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? Robotic surgery though the mouth is a safe and effective way to remove tumors of the throat and voice box, according to a study by head and neck cancer surgeons at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center -- Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC -- James).

This is the first report in the world literature illustrating the safety and efficacy of transoral robotic surgery for supraglottic laryngectomy, the researchers say.

The preliminary study examined the outcomes of 13 head and neck cancer patients with tumors located in the region of the throat between the base of the tongue and just above the vocal cords, an area known as the supraglottic region.

The study found that the use of robot-assisted surgery to remove these tumors through the mouth took about 25 minutes on average, and that blood loss was minimal -- a little more than three teaspoons, or 15.4 milliliters, on average, per patient. No surgical complications were encountered and 11 of the 13 patients could accept an oral diet within 24 hours.

If, on the other hand, these tumors are removed by performing open surgery on the neck, the operation can take around 4 hours to perform, require 7 to 10 days of hospitalization on average and require a tracheostomy tube and a stomach tube, the researchers say.

The findings were published recently in the journal Head and Neck.

"The transoral robotic technique means shorter surgery, less time under anesthesia, a lower risk of complications and shorter hospital stays for these patients," says first author Dr. Enver Ozer, clinical associate professor of otolaryngology at the OSUCCC -- James.

"It also means no external surgical incisions for the patient and better 3-D visualization of the tumor for the surgeon," says Ozer, a head and neck surgeon who specializes in robot-assisted techniques.

The cases examined in this study were part of a larger prospective study of 126 patients undergoing transoral robotic surgery between 2008 and 2011.

Other Ohio State researchers involved in this study were Bianca Alvarez, Kiran Kakarala, Kasim Durmus, Ted N. Teknos and Ricardo L. Carrau.
