Wall Street dips as traders gear up for Fed; ends July up

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks fell on Tuesday with traders' sights set again on Wednesday's Federal Reserve statement on the economy and a possible new round of stimulus.

The Nasdaq Composite, which underperformed on Monday, was the smallest decliner among the three major U.S. stock indexes in Tuesday's session, thanks in part to Apple shares' gain of 2.6 percent after a source said a new product will makes its debut at an event in September.

Volume was below average as Wall Street wrapped up its second consecutive positive month, with most of the monthly gains accumulated last week on hopes for more action from both the Fed and the European Central Bank. The ECB will meet on Thursday.

"Markets seem to be moving on talk, but I don't think that's going to be enough in the next few days," said Subodh Kumar, chief investment strategist at Subodh Kumar & Associates in Toronto. "I think the market risks being disappointed in terms of substance."

Coach slid 18.6 percent to $49.33 after the upscale handbag and leather goods maker reported lower-than-expected fourth-quarter sales. That drop was the worst single-day percentage drop for Coach's stock since September 17, 2001, which was the first trading day after the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Coach was the S&P 500's biggest loser in Tuesday's session.

For the month of July, the Dow rose 1 percent, while the S&P 500 climbed 1.3 percent and the Nasdaq added 0.2 percent. After seven months, the S&P 500 has gained nearly 10 percent for the year, despite a slowing world economy.

In Tuesday's session, the Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> fell 64.33 points, or 0.49 percent, to 13,008.68 at the close. The S&P 500 Index <.spx> dropped 5.98 points, or 0.43 percent, to 1,379.32. The Nasdaq Composite <.ixic> lost 6.32 points, or 0.21 percent, to 2,939.52.

About 6.5 billion shares changed hands on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and Amex, below the 2012 daily average of 6.74 billion through Monday's close.

Roughly seven issues fell for every five that rose on both the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq.

Cirrus Logic was also one of the Nasdaq's top gainers a day after the maker of integrated circuits posted a better-than-expected quarterly profit. Its shares shot up 23.2 percent to close at $36.77.

Facebook shares slid 6.2 percent to $21.71, their third consecutive record closing low, after a lackluster quarterly report last week showed decelerating user growth.

Pfizer Inc stock rose 1.4 percent to $24.04 after earlier hitting $24.48, its highest level since December 2007. The largest U.S. drugmaker reported higher-than-expected quarterly earnings and affirmed its 2012 profit forecast.

According to Thomson Reuters data through Tuesday morning, of the 321 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported second-quarter earnings to date, 67.3 percent have reported earnings above analysts' expectations. Over the past four quarters, the average beat rate is 68 percent.

U.S. home prices rose for the fourth month in a row in May, suggesting the housing market's recovery kept gaining traction, even as the broader economy is still struggling. Other data showed consumer confidence unexpectedly rose in July but spending fell in June for the first time in nearly a year as Americans saved more.

Man Falls on Train Tracks While Talking on Cellphone [VIDEO]

The latest video to illustrate the dangers of using your cellphone while walking is of a Philadelphia man falling onto a set of lowered train tracks while talking on his device. The incident occurred last year but video from the station's security cameras was recently released. (Note: In the above video, the fall is played over-and-over. We'll update with a better video when we get one).

[More from Mashable: The Power of Text Message Marketing [INFOGRAPHIC]]

Security cameras caught him on his phone when he fell onto the tracks and was knocked unconcious. Fortunately, there were no trains headed to the station at that time, but it was late at night and no one was around to save him. He eventually awoke and moved to safety, but it could have been much worse.

This highlights the increasingly common problem of distracted walking, caused by people who can't take their eyes or ears away from their cellphones.

[More from Mashable: Texting Teen Driver Goes on Trial for Homicide [VIDEO]]

It can be difficult to turn away from our phones and other mobile devices while walking. Numerous studies show that our mobile devices have become an addition for many of us, with 60% of respondants in one survey saying they typically don't go longer than an hour without checking their phone.

We've seen numerous incidences of people being caught-on-camera while running into danger, or at least embarrassment, while texting. In January 2011, a woman was captured on mall security cameras as she walked right into a fountain at a mall because she was distracted by her phone. Then in April, a man unknowingly put himself in a life-threatening situation when he was so distracted by texting his boss that he nearly ran into a bear that had wandered into a suburban California neighborhood.

Texting or browsing the web while walking may seem much less dangerous than doing those activities while driving, but distracted walking can put the texter, and those around them, in danger. In fact, CBS reports that injuries from accidents caused by walking while texting have quadrupled over the last seven years. A recent survey showed that 65% of people admitted to texting while walking.

Recently, law enforcement agencies across the county have been imposing stricter regulations and penalties for people caught texting or talking on their mobile devices while driving or walking, depending on the various ordinances.

"We are where we were with cellphone use in cars 10 years or so ago. We knew it was a problem, but we didn't have the data," Jonathan Akins, deputy executive director of the Governors Highway Safety Association, which represents state highway safety offices, tells the Associated Press.

Sure, cellphones are essential for today's world, but it's wise to put the phone away when you need to be focused on an activity that demands your attention -- even something as seemingly simple as walking.

How might law enforcement or the public encourage others not to walk while texting? Tell us in the comments.

(AP) ? Mike Oldfield wants to use the Olympics opening ceremony as a rallying cry.

The British musician performed part of his hit "Tubular Bells" live during Friday's spectacular, and says it was an honor ? and a vindication for a much-reviled musical genre: instrumental rock.

"Tubular Bells" was released in 1973 and sold millions. But a few years later the punk movement triggered a backlash against its brand of progressive rock.

Oldfield says it's time for a comeback.

He said Tuesday he hopes to use exposure from the ceremony "as a relaunch for instrumental music ? real music. Let's throw away all the computer software."

The 59-year-old says he felt a "glow of pride" when Danny Boyle asked him to be in the ceremony, which celebrated five decades of British music.

Everyone has the potential of becoming successful in the future. It takes someone who has good grades to become an engineer. A person who has a good voice can participate in various competitions before becoming a seasoned singer. The same determination is also needed should one decide to become a magician.

In medieval times, magic was associated with sorcery and witchcraft. People who were known to posses these skills were considered as heretics and were burned at the stake. Years later that has changed and now magic provides people with various kinds of entertainment, e.g., watching the statue of liberty disappear with just a wink of an eye or putting a person in a box and piercing it with swords and the volunteer comes out unscathed. These are all illusions that have amazed the audience and makes these people come back for more.

There have been a lot of talented magicians in this lifetime alone such as the likes of Harry Houdini who was an escaped artist, David Copperfield who has traveled around the world and amazed people with his large scale acts and lately David Blaine who is seen on television performing magic tricks for millions of viewers around the world.

With these wonders of magic, will there still be qualms why would one want to become a magician?

Others may also just opt to become one for the money. Talent fees to appear before live audiences cost a lot and with more bookings, such a magician could make a fortune. Some magicians who have become celebrities can now get endorsements from various companies and get a talent fee for promoting that brand.

There are also individuals who want to become magicians for the love of it. Some people believe that doing something feels better if one has the passion for it. Money is just a perk in the trade but if that person wants to take it to the limit and stand out above the rest, then a feeling of self accomplishment is fulfilled making that person prepare once again for the next challenge.

Some people grew up with magicians as role models. Why not? Magicians can turn one's rueful mood into an amazed one. What could be more fun and fulfilling than making people forget their worries and stressful situations? Becoming a magician is truly such a rewarding profession.

The reason behind one's intention on learning to be a good magician may vary. But one thing is for sure, magicians are here to pepper life with some fun from bewilderment. Whatever the reason one magician may have as to why he continues to perform tricks is not important. What matters is they make life less of a bore.
