Green America?s Green Business Network (GBN) is the first, largest and most diverse network of small green businesses offering a Green Business Certification designed to educate consumers and acknowledge businesses about social and environmental responsibility. (Founded in 1983.)
Green America has been a long-time leader in the assessment and accreditation of small green businesses, and has certified over 8000 businesses. Recently we expanded the certification to a three-tiered (bronze, silver, gold) structure and developed a comprehensive online sustainability tool (GreenGain) that allows for continuous improvement.
This position plays the lead role in managing the accreditation process for business members and in educating the public. This is an excellent leadership position in business sustainability assessment and improvement.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
?A. Standards and Certification Management
1. Manage the Continuous Improvement of Green America Green Business Standards
- Develop and manage an efficient and transparent external stakeholder process to review and improve the Green Business Standards and Certification, including advisory committees, industry sector taskforces, and public comment periods.
- Lead development of standards into industry-specific initiatives for the small business sustainability tool.
- Ensure appropriate research and presentation to the internal Standards Team on social and environmental policies and practices.
- Develop research partnerships with sustainable MBA programs.
2. Manage Strategic Development of Green America Certification
- Develop and launch an efficient outreach and marketing plan to position the Green America Certification Seal as the authentic and transparent green seal in the marketplace.
- Support GBN Director of Membership and Marketing in securing membership and standards-sharing partnerships with industry-specific green trade associations.
- Increase visibility of the new Seal image in the marketplace, by growing the number of GBN members using the new Seal and external media channels/organizations highlighting the new Seal.
- Work with GBN Director of Membership and Marketing in maximizing all GBN products and services as funnels for Certification.
- Develop large-scale distribution partnerships for the Green Business Certification.
- Oversee development and brand management of visuals and language for Green Business Certification.
- Develop a long-term strategic plan for incorporating yearly on-site reviews of a portion of businesses at the Gold level.
?3. Manage Development and Implementation of GreenGain Tool
- Oversee the ongoing development of the new GreenGain small business sustainability tool?which supports our accreditation process?in collaboration with our technology partner.
- Develop and lead re-assessment of existing Green Business Network members within framework of sustainability tool.
- Collect continual feedback on the success and improvement of the GreenGain tool and certification process from stakeholder groups
B. Marketing and Outreach Activities
- Represent Green America on accreditation and corporate responsibility issues at our Green Business Conferences/Seminars, Green Festivals and other sustainability leadership events.
- Develop online content and resources to educate current and prospective members about the standards.
- Provide tools, best practices, seminars and webinars to business members on the tool and accreditation process.
- Develop publicity partnerships to promote the Green Business Certification.
- Develop a social media strategy that allows consumers to rate or comment on a company?s Public Sustainability Report and link to social media platforms.
C. Team/Organizational Management
- Hire and supervise all Green Business research and assessment positions.
- Ensure accurate administrative processing of applications.
- Develop strategic and operating plans/budgets for the accreditation process.
- Manage improvements in overall process and standards (including revisions to the Standards Manual) in consultation with Board of Directors, Standards Team, technology team, and other staff as needed.
- In consultation with staff and Board of Directors, guide team in processes to develop policy guidance regarding key challenges or priorities.
- Work with Senior Researcher and the internal standards team to develop procedures around the tiered membership, including training and revising the Standards Team?s duties.
D. General Staff Responsibilities
- Participate in general staff meetings, the annual Operating Plan process.
- Serve on special teams or committees as needed.
- In consultation with the Standards Team, prepare annual operating plan that identifies revenue goals and strategies.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Masters in Sustainable Business or 3-5 years of equivalent experience in working with socially and environmentally responsible businesses and fair trade communities.
- Comfort working with technical partners on software tool development.
- Project Management experience.
- Comfort developing and maintaining partner relationships in support of strategic goals.
- Proven ability to work in a highly collaborative environment under tight deadlines.
- Experience in managing multiple projects and concurrent deadlines.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Supervisory experience.
- Excellent problem solving skills.
- Comfortable speaking in public.
- Ability to attend/travel to Green Festivals and other events as required (5-6 times/yr)
